About the role
We are hiring a senior backend engineer who builds new features that extend our products and owns the hard platform problems behind them: integrations with systems we don't control, authentication and authorization in a multi-tenant product, and services that run in five regions. You design the solution, write it down, ship it safely, and stay with it in production. This is a backend role close to AI product surfaces, not an AI/ML research role.
What you'll do
Build new product features
extend our existing products with new capabilities, from design and data model to API and production rollout, together with Product and Design.
Integrate institutional systems
LMS, CRM (e.g. Microsoft Dynamics) and SIS data through a reusable integration framework, including writeback.
Evolve the multi-tenant platform
organization hierarchies, granular role-based permissions, shared organization-level resources, and safe customization inside the LMS.
Scale efficiently across regions and peaks
keep data and monitoring in-region across EU, US, CA, AU and UK, prepare for 10x term-start traffic spikes, and cut infrastructure and AI costs.
Lead new initiatives
occasionally take technical leadership of a new initiative, coordinating the work of 2-3 engineers.
What you bring
6+ years as a software engineer building and running production backend services.
Production experience in more than one backend language (e.g., Python, PHP, Go, Java, TypeScript/Node, C#).
Working Python knowledge and interest in learning async Python.
Hands-on system integrations: third-party APIs, OAuth flows, webhooks, data sync, retries, and rate limits.
Production ownership: logs, metrics, tracing, alerts; you debug live issues across services and third parties.
Clear, direct written and spoken English; you raise blockers early.
Daily use of AI coding tools, e.g., Codex or Claude, and you verify what they produce.
Architecture design of services, data models, and service boundaries that others built on.
Technical leadership: led development of a system across at least 2-3 engineers.
Nice to have
Our stack: Python, FastAPI, MongoDB, AWS, Docker, GitHub Actions.
LMS integrations: LTI 1.3, Canvas, Brightspace, Blackboard, Moodle.
Data residency and multi-region systems (GDPR, FERPA).
Laravel/PHP experience.
Exposure to LLM-powered products, agents, or tool-calling.
Authentication and authorization in practice: SSO, OAuth/OIDC, JWTs, RBAC, multi-tenant access control.
